Meet Bertie Smith
Registered Art Psychotherapist
I am an art psychotherapist dedicated to using art as a powerful tool for self-expression and healing. Through art therapy, individuals can explore their emotions, overcome challenges, and enhance their overall well-being
I work in an Integrative way, meaning I use ideas from different therapeutic frameworks depending on individual need.
This might include:
-
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy - how our past, unconscious processes and repeating relational patterns impact us.
-
Humanistic (Person-Centred and Gestalt influenced) Psychotherapy - our experience and self-actualisation in the ‘here-and-now’.
-
In a session, art, imagery and metaphor support these frameworks.
I consider my style to be warm and empathetic, with an awareness of how identity and social context influence our life experiences.
The social model of disability, intersectionality and reflective anti-oppressive practice around issues of difference inform my work. My therapy is supportive of all LGBTQ+ issues, including those faced by transgender and gender expansive people.
I work with an awareness of different learning disabilities and neurodiversity.

I work with children, young people and adults. I have an enhanced DBS check and I am registered with the HCPC and BAAT.

Healing through art and words
People come to therapy for many different reasons, and Art Psychotherapy can be a truly life-changing experience. By engaging with it, you can explore emotional issues in a unique way—expressing yourself creatively or using symbols and metaphors to uncover deeper insights.
Art Psychotherapy blends the core elements of traditional talking therapy—such as a safe, confidential space to explore what’s on your mind—with the added dimension of creative expression. This might involve painting, drawing, sculpture, poetry, photography, music, or any other medium that feels right for you. You don’t need to be an artist or have any previous experience with art to benefit
. Art Psychotherapy isn’t about artistic skill—it’s about using the creative process as a starting point for reflection. Together, we can explore what your creations might reveal and how best to support your mental health and wellbeing. For more information about Art Psychotherapy, you can visit the websites of BAAT or Mind.
